Who wants to play William and Sly 2?

EDIT: Alpha test is over now! The game goes viral on the 26th! Consider it a XXX-mas present. :3

Well, well, you lucky dogs! The saintly sponsorship man at Kongregate has agreed to allow an “Alpha Test” of William and Sly 2 here on my blog! Anyone who wants to play, comment on this post (it’ll ask for your email) and I’ll send you the super secret link!

Don’t forget to come back and let me know if you find any bugs (or just to lavish me with praise, I’m a total attention whore, you know. I suppose you could say it sucks, too. That’s still attention…). The game is done, so this is an unusual alpha test, but I’ll rest easier knowing the game is bug free when it spreads it’s quivering wings and flies out of my clutches.

Any portals who are interested in hosting the game, post an email so I can send you the file when the game is released.

    My review:
    - Great ambient sfx and background graphics, simply awesome
    - Sly’s skull looks a bit too big at a second glance
    - also, the jumping motion (especially the takeoff) looks awkward. Not
smooth enough transitions (are there any?), IMO.
    - the sound these Ohnem things make is not enjoyable.
    - I really like the midair left/right direction change transitions.
    - I miss some music. At the beginning, there was music and it was great,
but now there ain’t any there, it’s back! still, not often enough.
    - I like how everything is marked down on the map. I’d find it even more
exciting if I knew nothing of the territory and the map would form while
    I jump around etc.
    - I’m not quite sure about what I should do with the pixies…
    - I like the “inventory”! And how those plants are in the foreground.

I don’t have enough time to completely play through the game right now,
but so far, it’s awesome, although the issues above bother me a bit.
It’s probably too late to change them and so far, it’s just me.

  • Luke

Another email sent. Thanks for the positive feedback guys! :)

@GamesPhysicist: For the controls to be responsive there really can’t be a transitional animation for the jump. :( Transitions are a common problem when animating for a game, but usually the character animations (at least in a 2D game) are done at a low framerate which disguises the transitions. (Look at a game by Gonzossm, for example.) It was a feat just trying to get the turns and the various falling animations to look acceptable, haha. I wasn’t too concerned about the jumping and landing because that usually happens very quickly anyway. The jumping is also odd because it’s never the same height. It’ll be approximate at best, I think.

I think missing the music is a good thing. :3 I means you like it and want to hear it again. The game will probably take most people over an hour to complete, so if the music was just on repeat it would play at least 24 times. The birdsong is just a few clips randomized together, so it acts like a separate music landscape and adds more variation with hardly any file space taken up. I did the same thing in the first game and it went over pretty well. I think both parts have a different feel to them and it makes for more interest, you know?

As for the Ohnem, they’re supposed to be kind of creepy/sublime. The sound is actually a type of throat singing that Tibetan monks use to read scripture, haha. I dunno, I like it. :P I did debate over how I wanted to ohnem to appear in the game, and I decided to go with something kind of massive and jarring because it makes them seem more otherworldly to me.

I’m glad you like the turn animations, haha. I remember you said you didn’t like those in the first game. There was really only one in the first one though. The 3D character is nice because I can make a lot of them pretty quickly.

  • clm

    cool i will XD

  • stan

hi i would like to play

  • Iliana

This game was AWESOME!! I loved the visual aspect of the game; the leafy trees, large colorful lilacs that seem to pop off the screen, William who in both games was cleverly disguised as you and in this game was muscly (nice :P), the little squirrelly, glowing pixies, and of course Sly the soft, scurrying fox! I really liked the story in the game and how it presented itself gradually throughout the game in the journal pages. The only thing that I didn’t like was that in the journal entries William acted like he didn’t know who Sly was, but in the first game he seemed to know him just fine. Overall I thought the game was fantastic and I am waiting for your next wonderful game whatever it may be!

  • Lexa

I read this and almost peed myself. PLEASE SEND IT TO ME

  • Roger

how long till its online for the public

  • Noemy

Hi, I would like to play too!
    thanks

  • Gifgiff

It was all so, so beautiful! I loved the.. the.. oh my goodness it was so good. Gee, where to start? Will a large pile of words do? It’s the least I can do to thank you for letting everyone play the game early.

The foliage was fantastic. I have never seen a 2d game with so much visual depth. It’s amazing what a few (well ok, more than a few) layers of parallax can do! Exploring on its own was fun just because I got to look at everything.

The pixies were absolutely adorable. So springy! Their jumping AI was a little too predictable in the air, since it was easy to tell that they were programmed to jump pretty much as soon as their position was lower than Sly’s, but I loved the way they scurried around on the ground. Their only downside was that the game lost a few frames per second with each one I thawed. By the time I’d gotten all four, things were getting pretty sluggish =P
It always ran smoothly, though! The frame rate never dropped low enough for things to look choppy. And to be honest, it didn’t really bother me – the game is just as pretty in slow motion! What you said about it running faster than the first game isn’t quite true (I.. think you said that it should, anyways. Might be imagining things), as the first one ran fine on this same computer. But I’m totally amazed at how efficiently it runs, because there’s so much more going on in this one! My computer is a six or so year old laptop, so I’m a bit surprised it works at all.

I only came across two bugs in several hours of playing, and they were both not much more than slight visual glitches. I wouldn’t be surprised if you noticed them and just left them in because they didn’t really matter. When the left and right arrow keys are held down simultaneously, Sly won’t accelerate in either direction; he’ll continue moving at whatever velocity he had when the second arrow key was pressed. I thought this was pretty neat, because it allowed me to make Sly run at a much slower speed than normal and look at his run loop with fewer distractions from the foreground (good job on it, by the way! Very very smooth – a totally fitting style of animation for WaS). By pressing the arrow keys almost in unison, he’d accelerate slightly in one direction or the other, then continue at a constant snails pace while the run animation played at the regular speed. So I played around with this for a while and then suddenly noticed that — hey, he’s doing the moonwalk! It’s possible to make Sly run backwards by gaining some velocity in a direction, quickly releasing the arrow key and pressing and holding the opposite arrow key, then immediately pressing and holding the arrow key that was down originally.
That was a crappy explanation, so for example, if you want to run backwards to the right, do this:
Hold right until Sly’s running at a fair speed, and do the following as quickly as you can: release right arrow, press and hold left arrow, and press and hold right arrow again.
It’s awfully fun, though! I’m not so sure you should remove it. =P Took me a while to discover it, too – only noticed it while mucking about after playing through the game the first time.

The other bug was much rarer and more insignificant. A couple times, while jumping right next to a wall, Sly would be in the last frame of his jumping animation during the entire leap from start to finish. Like I said, though, it only happened once or twice, and I couldn’t replicate it on purpose no matter how hard I tried.

The jumping animation is great, and the midair direction changing animations worked amazingly well. That’s just about exactly how foxes jump! ..But that’s only the way they look when they jump straight up, and most of the time I wasn’t jumping straight up. Seems like you could have at least made the animation begin on a later frame when Sly has more horizontal velocity and the up arrow is pressed, though maybe that wouldn’t look so great either. Animation is a finnicky thing, to be sure. I was a bit worried about what the characters would look like as rendered 3d models, but you obviously knew what you were doing and apparently I shouldn’t have doubted that. The smoothness of the animations helped the game’s atmosphere quite a lot for me, and even just that mostly made up for the lack of hand-drawn frames.

Well, that’s just about all I can think of to say at the moment. It would have been nice if the fairyflies had followed Sly around with even more organic movements – as it is, they look a little robotic the way they all stop as suddenly as Sly when he lands after a long fall – but I really can’t complain. Everything is so dang pretty.
Oh yeah, and I was a caring, obese, and zen-minded fox. Yippee!

  • Luke

@Iliana: Haha, yeaaaaah Will’s a self portrait. I’ve been working out, so I thought I’d idealize him to my goals LOL. It was good anatomy practice too. :P

You didn’t like his relationship with sly, though? He never actually called him by name in the first one. :3 I figure the gnomes gave him the name Sly and William just knows him as a wild animal that hangs around.

    *****

@Roger: It’ll be a few weeks ’till it goes live.

    *****

@Gifgiff: LOL I didn’t notice the moon-walking at all! In all my testing it never happened to me, haha. I’ll definitely leave it in, though, it’s kinda fun. :3 You can even make him jump backwards!

As for the weird jump, I’ve seen that a few times. I was never able to repeat it either, though. It must be happening somewhere right on the edge of the hit-testing. I might try to fix it, but I like you said I don’t know that it’s even all that big a deal.

I’m glad you liked the 3D models. :) I know a lot of people in the flash community don’t like 3D, but I’ve always suspected that was because amateur 3D is pretty horrible most of the time… It seems to fit a lot better with my style of backgrounds, though, and I like making it way better so I’ll probably continue in that vein.

I’m betting we have similar laptops because the pixies slow mine down a bit in a few places (only where there’s lots of detail though). The game originally ran WAY better than the first one, but then I made the decision to double the frame rate to 60 and add 5 more layers, lol. I actually toned it down a bit, as there used to be 2 MORE layers for mountains in the background. The mountain you see there now is just a screenshot of the tiles I was using. In the end I remembered that turning off the background layers in the first game actually gave a nice sense of depth, so I just made it fixed. It was less work mapmaking too. :3

Srsly, though, I look at the first game now and wonder how it was even playable. The double frame rate makes all the difference in the world.

Oh, and I think I might fix the robotic aspects of the pixies/flies. I noticed that too, recently, and never got around to changing it.

  • GamesPhysicist

    Okay, Lucas.

One more thing: The number of fireflies isn’t saved! This annoyed me a lot and I think it’s an issue you should fix. Collecting fairyflies is hard work, duh.

  • Luke

    Lol, rsrs? That’s a saving penalty! ;)

Oookay, I’ll add it at some point!

*grumble* Making me be less lazy… *grumble*

  • Lexa

Just finished :D I didn’t notice any bugs.

Although: when Sly is not moving and facing one direction, if you start pressing another direction it looks funny. He’s suddenly standing up.

I was a quite disappointed in the Pixie Flight because I loved the Wings so much in the previous game. The particles really slow down my computer too. I was wondering if maybe you could have the pixie flight work the same way but have wings that quickly unfurled and beat once instead of an explosion?

The 3D characters work great :D Sly’s head is maybe a bit big though.

I also love the journal. You realise that Sly is a flawed character like any of us and learn a bit about their relationship.

    The Ohnem’s sound was incredible.

Overall probably my favorite online game. No lie. Would absolutely love a WaS3 but I guess you’re pretty sick of foxes and mushrooms, huh.

    10/10

  • Lia

I would like to play it, too. I have been looking forward to this game.

  • Tara J

    I want to play, please.

  • clm

Its awesome :) Its just packed with so much art and effects that took a lot of work and effort. the fire particles did slow the game down but apart from that the animations, music and layers/ 3D effects are just perfect :3 I bet this game will be a hit on kongregate and all i can say is…. It’s a piece of art :).

These William and sly games are no doubt the two best flash games out there ^^

Also it may be genius if you don’t decide to make another as it will keep everyone wanting more :p buuuut… one more cant hurt right? XD

Anyhow thanks for the awesome games :)

  • Luke

@Lexa: Another person thinks sly’s head is too big?! But he’s a smart fox! All those brains have to go somewhere!! LOL…

I tried the wings, I really did, but I got frustrated with them. :( I’m still a newb at 3D. I also couldn’t think of a way for it to look decent, since the jump happens so quickly. All I can say is sorry to that one. :P Maybe wings will play a part in the next one. I’m sure I’ll do another one at some point, but it’ll be a while so don’t hold your breath. :3

@Clm: Thanks! :D I hope Kong likes it. They have nice rewards for popular games. When it’s released I’ll let you guys know and you can all go inflate the score for me! LOL!

  • Matt

At long last, after a couple of play-throughs, I am ready to give some feedback. I’ll try to write up my synopsis without giving anything away.

    GLITCHES AND BUGS:

No major glitches or bugs at all, as far as I can tell. A little bit slower in some spots, like previously mentioned (fire & pixies), but everything else ran smooth. This did not have any negative effect on my gaming experience.

    ART:

I think Sly’s tail needs a touch-up, but overall the art is fantastic. I like the lush forest and the lighting. In comparison to the first game, it’s hard to make a sequel that beats a first in a series. The first game was so original and unique and left much up to the imagination of the player about the world of WaS. Wonderful artwork. I loved the ruins and the rain. The stonework in the background reminded me of the Appalachian mountain environment and northern New England. I wish the plant life in the sequel had been more consistent with the first game, but that’s my personal opinion. Even so, it was still very well-done and impressive.

    GAMING EXPERIENCE:

The puzzles were okay, but I wish there was more to them somehow. More challenging in some way. Perhaps more ways to interact with the game environment? Perhaps Sly should have other abilities, such as one or two magic spells, like fire and ice (somewhat similar currently-existing feature of this game is noted). Freeze this, burn that, etc. Another level of basic interaction would add quite a bit to the experience. A possibly easy-to-add feature would be to play as one or two other characters in the game (maybe after beating it?), or unlock a secret quest or mini-quest. More of the WaS world was revealed through William’s journal entries, which made things more interesting.

    OVERALL:

Basically, this game felt different than the first (which was inevitable, given the 3D features used in the artwork). Despite my personal opinion about the game environment, I loved the artwork, was mostly satisfied with the gaming experience, and found reading the journal entries interesting. I wish it were a little more challenging and in artistic ways consistent with the first game, but otherwise, I enjoyed it quite a bit.

I wish I could collaborate on making a game with someone, I have so many ideas. At the very least, I would like to offer my musical composition skills.

Please feel free to delete if I inadvertently inserted any spoilers.

  • Rogerio

Ok, nice news, i will play until tomorrow.

  • Norse

  • Tara J

That was a great game. :D
I didn’t notice any bugs or anything like that.
I loved all the little hiding places.
I may have to play it again and give a more detailed opinion, but overall I loved it. Job well done. :D

  • Neogore

    Me too! :D

  • Lia

That was lovely! Great visuals and sound, and i didn’t run into any bugs. I also didn’t have any of the lag problems some others describe.
    You really make wonderful games.

    Some (minor) comments about gameplay:

I do think it could have been a bit more difficult, and preferred the implied familiarity between William, Sly and the game world in the first game over the more conflict-ridden texts in this one. Even though there are no enemies here, the game feels less happy and peaceful to me because of the contents of the diary. I also expected to have a punchline from the diary as the end.

    Some specifics:
I would prefer having the world closed off at both ends with a visual barrier, instead of an invisible, wink-at-the-player one. This one took me out of the atmosphere a bit.

One thing that made me run around for a bit at the end was that boxes didn’t sparkle like the rest of the items did. Is that on purpose?
I also freed a pixie before running into the pixie quest, which got me confused what it did for a while and made me try all sorts of things. Maybe swapping the locations of the pixie and runestone quests would help there, if more people ran into this.
The teleport ability is a bit obsolete if you get it after the pixie flight one (as i did).

Oh, and like the others, i really appreciated the male eye-candy in this game. The breathing was a nice touch. If you ever make a comparably pretty and athmospheric adventure game with lots of naked men like this in it, i’ll pay good money for it :)

  • Riley

Could I have the link…. pweez? :3 lol

For gods sake Lucas, send me the link! I’m dying here!! :U

  • iWantToPlayWillAndSly

I would like to play, please! I’m not even much of a gamer, I just really enjoy William and Sly.. Please send me the link ASAP:)!

  • KitsonHeart

OK, i played the game all the way through! ^^ And i loved it! I’m sad that it’s so short though. Ohwell. Now, i really liked the puzzles. Though I’ll admit, some of them had me going insane for a bit. XD Mainly the chest/keys and bombs. Kinda hard to see small objects in tall grass. ^^; Buuut… I got the Ohnem sight. XD that’s what helped me beat the game. I loved the Pixies too! They looked like miniature Sly’s. XD I was a bit sad that they disappeared though. Well, other than that, the game was really good. William tanning caught me off guard though. XD I was expecting him to be looking through his library for his Diary. Nice development on William and Sly’s story btw. I was honestly wondering how they met. Shame that i couldn’t read the whole diary after finishing the game. Left me hanging. XP Invisible wall? That magic is special my friend. XD

“You are a caring, obese, and zen-minded fox.” XD

  • Luke

@Matt: First, thanks for the long critique! I like reading a good analysis.

It seems like your overall point is “I really enjoyed it! But, it’s not as good as the first.” Or maybe “Not quite what I hoped for/expected.”

That’s fair, but I think if you sit on it a bit and look back you might end up liking it better. I think it’s hard to go into a sequel and enjoy it the same way because you aren’t surprised by it. In fact, you go in expecting. If it isn’t exactly like the first, or just an extension of some sort, you immediately see the differences as flaws and have to fight against disappointment – or an invalidation of nostalgia – rather than just enjoying it for what it is. I say “you” here in the general sense.

I tried really hard to stay true to the original, but I made it two years ago. It was inevitable that it would be different, like you said. I just hoped that if I didn’t stay true to anything else, I could at least stay true to the essence and ambiance of the first game.

I’ve also been in a bit of a slump, design wise. To deliver anything above pure disappointment is pretty great in my eyes after Ether Space Defense, so I’m glad to hear you enjoyed it nonetheless.

If I could make a request, though, it would be that you play it on its own terms and let it be itself. That might be impossible, but it would be worth your while to try, I think. :3

    *****

@Lia: In terms of the story did you like the ending “punch line” or did you not like it because you were expecting it?

You don’t actually have to help the rune ohnem at all, but I figured the runes are still helpful even with the flight. Flying across the map takes over a minute, and when you’re searching for the last few items it can get really annoying just to rely on the flight/running.

I’m incredibly tempted to make a platformer about naked men, now…I’ll have to restrain myself. :P

    *****

@KitsonHeart: Haha, glad you had fun! :) The pixies pretty much ARE miniature Slys. Lazy GFX FTW!!

  • NikiTheDog

I want play william and sly 2 … send link pleaseee ;)

thanks for the reply. Just cant wait to see how it does on kong ^^ It’ll be interesting to see what people of all genres think of it :) This is just one on these “original idea” games. You don’t know until it happens XD Good luck :)

  • CobraPerson

The game is so awesome! I dont know where to start! First of all I love how you added details like all the flowers and trees in the background. Also I love the noise of the ohnem things! The pixies are also really cute! But i just cant find the rest… Also I dont know if its made like this but I see a pixie on the ledge but I just cant reach it. :( Other than that the game was really fun! I like the little caves and such to!

  • InvisibilityCloak

    Must. Play. Now.

    ;D

  • Luke

@GamesPhysicist: I might add it to Newgrounds. I was considering trying to sell it on Amazor or iTunes or sommat to make a little extra monies. If I upload it anywhere I’ll make a post about it. :3

  • Ben Dover

I hope you do post it on Newgrounds because I’d love to see it there, and I’m sure more than a few people would like to see it, too. That’s why I’ve avoided playing it early; I kind of put all my eggs in the “William and Sly 2 being released to a website I’m familiar with” basket.

  • Nemo

I would love to play! I’ve never commented before, but I love your games- so artistic, I can tell you really put effort into them- and William and Sly was pretty much the most gorgeous little game I’ve ever played :) You’re very good at what you do!

yeah I want to play tooo … :D

  • yeah its here!!!!!! XD yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeessssssssssssss!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Raven

I tried out the game and I have no complaints at all except that I can’t get some of the last items. Sly wont jump high enough. While I’m still on the topic of Sly’s jumping, he looks a bit stiff when he’s falling a long ways. Is there any way you can make him look a little looser when he jumps?

No, I didn’t finish the pixie challenge yet. The last pixie is also something I can’t reach. By the way I just LOVE the pixies! They are so cute and sparkly and I love how they follow Sly everywhere!

All the artwork is absolutely AMAZING. It all looks so smooth and another word I can’t think of, but it’s a good word. Can I ask what art program you use and if it’s free? I would really like to try it out!

Well, that’s the end of my review. I hope it was helpful. I’m looking forward to your reply!

  • ROVI

    HEEEEEK> WILLIAM AND SLY 2 :P

  • Raven

I did find the last pixie and finish the game. Oh, and the word I couldn’t think of was soft. The artwork looks soft.

@Lumina: The email address you posted on your comment is invalid. :(

@Raven: I used Blender for the 3D art (characters). That IS free (and pretty great, on top of it). They even did a big update just recently to make the interface easier to learn!

The backgrounds and other 2D art was just done in a drawing program like photoshop. I use Fireworks MX, which is a very very old program. All I really use in it are the regular circle/square brush, the airbrush, and some color correction filters, haha. You can find those in any art program on the market today. I asked for Artrage for Christmas, if you’re looking for a recommendation. ;)

I love the first W&S game, it’s so strange, so mysterious and melancholic, it made me even cry few times.

  • Ellah

Your games rock!! Can’t wait to play!! :)

  • Luke

@GamesPhysicist: I’m just showing Tom (of NG) a branding test for the site license he’s buying.

@Everyone Else: It’s on Kong now! I just posted a link.

  • Hey! I would love to host this great game on my site 1001 Spill!

  • Hi!
I just played WANDS2 on Kongregate.
Collected all mushrooms, 23 pages of 25, solved all puzzles got only one Rock to bomb but did not have a bomb but did have a key. After bombing the rock closes chest appeared but my key suddenly disappeared and some kind of deadlock happened. Thus did not manage to finish the game. It was really frustrating.

Nevertheless the game is really awesome. You’ve managed to create great atmosphere of all-style classic games. Impressive job!

  • shane

plz plz i ask you lucas paakh for walkthrough its getting a littel hard

  • shane

for me but i realy like playing this game it gets better each time you find the journal but i beg plz make a walkthrough

    IT ANNOYING!!!

  • OMG OMG OMG I discovered the game today. LOVE IT!! How could anyone NOT?!The graphics are wonderful, the music is magical, and it makes me think. AWEOSOMENESS!!!
I have to say, though, I played the first William and Sly, and I was not impressed. I don’t know if it was the website or what, but I could see a grid through the screen, as if it weren’t complete. There were also little scribbly dots everyhwere, like an old movie.
I really enjoy the pixies. They are so cute and intergetic!!! Right now I have the page up as a dfferent tab. I am having trouble getting the last pixie unfrozen. Please, anyone who has completed it please PLEASE make a walkthrough of some sort to show me what to do!!!
William rules, too. But what is up with his ears in the first W & S?
I need to get back to my game, my pixies are jumping around and they might explode. I need the last 1!!! Behind the temple that would be last starting from the right.please anyone help mee!
Adios (is that how it is spelled?) from Evyn!

  • Oh now I feel bad taking up all the space :( But anyway I wanted to comment on the Onhem things. They are SO creepy! The sound, the sound, oh man the SOUND!!! It was haunting. Amazing. Astonishing. The riddles? HARD. I am still trying at the 4th little pixie D: I can’t get him!! Poor little guy. He must be cold in there…..
ANYWAY I Lalso wanted to say….WOWZA! The trees and plants.. Amazing. It all looks so REAL! It gets me thinking what the computer games in 30 years will look like…..you know what I mean? It is amazing. Now I want to go out and draw a fox. And maybe try to capture a pixie while he is sitting and draw ‘em. (Snipping Tool. Not like, really get one. That would be weird.)
I apologize for using MORE space. I will send it and be like: “DOH! I should have said THAT! I gotta go do it!!” Oh, that riminds me. I love the casualty in William’s diolauge (Is that how it is spelled?). “Do I look tan? I dont wanna burn.” lol.
Well my pixies are freaking again.. They must not be able to sit still for a long period of time. Sorry about all of my typos, you will se a major one and say to yourself: “What a dork. Does she even pay attention to what she is TYPING?!” Yeah, SHE.
LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT THE GAME THANKS SO MUCH IT ROCKS SOME SOCKS MAKE A THIRD FOR YOUR WEIRDO FFRIEND EVYN!!!!!

its sounds good.i hope it lives up to this comment

  • haldir

This is a must play game. Very realistic atmosphere in the game. Gameplay is really good also. But I’ve gathered 98 mushrooms and 24 journal pieces but can’t get any more items and can’t finish the game. Anyone knows how to do it and finish the game? Please leave a comment. Thanks.
