Breaking Into the Third Dimension

I’ve been looking at the Unity game engine over the last few days, and I’m amazed at how easy it is to make a 3D game these days! I’m thinking I MUST try it out on something. The only downside is that it’s REALLY expensive for the pro version which has all the sexy features to make your games look awesome.

Soooo, I’m wondering if anyone has tried any other editors and could recommend one. I think I’ll try out Torque3D and NeoAxis to see how they compare. They’re much less expensive and sound like they have similar features, but we’ll see, I suppose…

  • How much does the unity software cost? People might be willing to donate to see some of your william and sly kind of games go 3D…

One major problem with Unity: it doesn’t support Linux. You’ll prevent a substantial number of users from using any game you write using Unity.

As a Linux user, I’d ask you to hold off on committing to Unity until they are truly cross-platform like Flash.

@Anthony: It’s about $1500 for the pro version. I’ve learned a bit more about it, and you can get an awful lot out of the free version so I think I might just go with it. I can get the pro if I make anything substantial.

@Phred: The problem with Linux isn’t just that Unity doesn’t support it, it’s that pretty much nothing supports it. :( I could go about writing an engine from scratch, I suppose, but that would take an awful lot of time/learning and I probably couldn’t do it as well as a big team anyway.

The good news is that Unity will export to flash, and flash IS supported on Linux, so that’s one avenue to go for 100% support.
